FROG 2017 is a 3-day conference held in conjunction with the Vienna Game City and will take place from October 13th – 15th 2017 at the Vienna City Hall. There are three submission categories:
1. Academic presentations
2. Thesis presentations (doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s theses)
3. Presentation of pre-scientific papers (“vorwissenschaftliche Arbeiten – VWAs“)
For the preFROG conference, which takes place on October 11th 2017 at the Federal Ministry of Families and Youth (bmfj), you can submit within a fourth category:

1. Academic presentations
(30 minutes)
The program committee invites game scholars and industry professionals to submit proposals for presentations relating to the conference topic: The Player Perspective – looking at players, and players looking back (see CfP for details). The program committee will evaluate submissions based on the quality of research and novelty of work. Extra emphasis will be put on argumentative clarity and significance for the conference topic. Accepted speakers are exempt from conference fees.
Proposals can be submitted via the online form on the conference website. Submissions should use the English language and contain the following information:
- The name, email address and affiliation of the main author
- An abstract outlining the work to be presented, including a working title and names and affiliation of all authors / speakers (no longer than 550 words, excl. references)
- A short abstract* (no longer than 100 words)
- Short bios* of all authors (no longer than 70 words per author)
2. Thesis presentations
(15 minutes)
As has become FROG tradition, the program committee also invites students within the field of game studies to submit their work, especially Master’s theses and dissertations (completed or in the process of completion). The submissions and, in case of acceptance, presentations must use the English language, regardless of thesis language. Submitted theses should preferably relate to the conference topic, but other game-related work will be considered depending on the quality of research and novelty of work. Accepted speakers are exempt from conference fees.

- The name, email address and affiliation of the main author
- An abstract outlining the work to be presented, including a working title and names and affiliation of all authors / speakers (no longer than 550 words, excl. references)
- A short abstract* (no longer than 100 words)
- Short bios* of all authors (no longer than 70 words per author)
- If a thesis document is available, a PDF-version can be uploaded via the online form.
3. Presentation of pre-scientific papers (“vorwissenschaftliche Arbeiten – VWAs“)
(15 minutes)
For the very first time, the program committee invites high-school students to submit pre-scientific papers (“vorwissenschaftliche Arbeiten – VWAs”). The submissions and, in case of acceptance, presentations must use the English language. Submitted VWAs are not required to follow the conference topic; all VWA’s dealing with matters of games and play are welcome.
The program committee will select the most exceptional VWAs to be presented at the FROG 2017 conference. There will be no conference fee for accepted speakers in this category as well as one accompanying person (teacher, parent, classmate…)
Proposals can be submitted via the online form on the conference website. Submissions should use the English language and contain the following information:
- The name, email address and school of the main author
- An abstract outlining the work to be presented, including the VWA title (or an English translation, if the VWA has been written in German) and the names and school of all authors / speakers (no longer than 550 words, excl. references)
- A short abstract* (no longer than 100 words)
- Short bios* of all authors (no longer than 70 words per author)
- The final VWA (Word- or PDF-file) needs to be uploaded via the online form.
4. Poster presentation at the preFROG conference (September 11th, 2017)
In the run-up to the FROG 2017 conference, the program committee will host a preFROG conference day in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Winfred Kaminski (TH Cologne, Germany), which will focus on the topic „Erlaubt ist, was gefällt!? Computerspiele zwischen Ethik und Ästhetik“ („Anything Goes!? Computergames between Ethics and Aesthetics“). The program committee invites scholars, and especially junior researchers, from all field to submit their proposals for poster presentations that explore matters like violence, morals, sexuality, gender or addiction and games from a current perspective. (see the Call for Posters for more detailed information in German). Submissions and, in case of acceptance, posters should be written and presented in German.
Proposals can be submitted via the online form on the conference website. Submissions should use the German language and contain the following information:
- The name, email address and affiliation of the main author
- An abstract outlining the work to be presented, including a working title and names and affiliation of all authors / speakers (no longer than 550 words, excl. references)
- A short abstract* (no longer than 100 words)
- Short bios* of all authors (no longer than 70 words per author)
- If a poster draft is available, a JPG- or PDF-version can be uploaded via the online form.
* In case of acceptance, short abstracts and short bios will be used for the final conference program/Book of Abstracts.
